The two Brooklyn cops charged with raping a handcuffed teenage girl in the back of their police van have quit their jobs, police said Monday.
Disgraced Officers Eddie Martins and Richard Hall showed up at police headquarters in the morning to resign under pressure because they already had been charged with the crime and suspended without pay.
If they hadn’t quit, they would have faced a departmental trial on Nov. 9 in addition to their criminal case.
Police Commissioner James O’Neill said an indictment on such serious charges “tarnishes all of the admirable things accomplished by other, good officers every day” and “stains the legacies of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.”
“Had these charges been upheld in an upcoming departmental trial, I would have fired them immediately,” O’Neill said.
“And I would have done so on behalf of every NYPD cop, because we owe the communities we serve – as well as the honest, hardworking men and women of this department – nothing less.”
