Jets are getting first taste of a very different Bucs team

Let’s take a closer look at the Jets opponent this week:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Record: 2-6

Head coach: Dirk Koetter (second season); Offensive coordinator: Todd Monken; Defensive coordinator: Mike Smith

Overview: The Buccaneers entered the season with high hopes, but they have struggled mightily. They come into this game riding a five-game losing streak. They lost quarterback Jameis Winston to an injured shoulder in last week’s game, and star wide receiver Mike Evans is suspended this week. They will turn to former Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to lead them in Winston’s absence.

Best offensive player: With Evans out, DeSean Jackson will be in the spotlight this week. The former Eagles and Redskins star has not had much of an impact in his first season in Tampa. He has 27 catches for 422 yards and two touchdowns this year. The Bucs have struggled to get the ball to him down the field. He has one catch of 40 yards or more.

Best defensive player: Linebacker Lavonte David has become a very good player for Tampa Bay. He has four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and a touchdown for the Bucs, who have not played great on defense this year.

Biggest offensive concern: The Buccaneers have moved the ball this year (13th in total offense) but have failed to score too often. They rank 21st in scoring offense at 19.8 points per game. Now, they have to get used to Fitzpatrick at quarterback and no Evans.

Biggest defensive concern: Take your pick. The Buccaneers have not done much well this year. What stands out, though, is the lack of a pass rush. They have the fewest sacks in the league, with just eight. You would expect more from a front seven that has some talent.

Injury to watch: Defensive end Robert Ayers did not practice Wednesday because of ankle and calf issues.

Coach’s quote: Koetter on Jameis Winston’s bizarre pregame speech last week that involved him licking his fingers and “eating” a W: “Jameis is a tremendous leader, but he has his own style and I think as a coach, you have to be careful of trying to squash a guy’s leadership style. If you’ve ever been in a leadership position, you know that when you’re giving speeches, all of them aren’t home runs. There’s some singles, there’s some doubles and there’s some flyouts in there, and I don’t grade Jameis on his speeches. I do know he’s a heck of a leader and I think every player on our team would say that.”
