Roy Halladay was recorded flying dangerously in his ICON A5 just days before he crashed and died Tuesday in the Gulf of Mexico.
“That’s low, pretty neat. I would have never thought they’d be able to fly low like that,” the man recording the video can be heard saying. “That’s almost like interaction with the boat level. That doesn’t look good … Man, that’s crazy low. That’s crazy.”
Details are sparse as to what happened Tuesday afternoon, but TMZ spoke to a witness who said Halladay had been “flying like that all week. Aggressively.” The gossip site had footage from the day of the crash, but it was difficult to decipher what had caused the plane’s erratic flight.
His family defended his piloting abilities in a statement released Thursday. The 40-year-old future Hall of Fame member had been an avid pilot for years.
“He was widely respected by those who knew him in the aviation community for his hard work, attention to detail and dedication to safety while flying,” it read in part.
The National Transportation Safety Board has begun its investigation into what caused the crash.
“It looked like a high-energy impact,” investigator Noreen Price said in a news conference this week, though the full details may not be known for some time. “All the pieces were there. Most everything was attached.”
