Jerry Jones ‘laughs’ in the face of NFL attacks

Jerry Jones doesn’t sound too worried about “nuclear” war.

The always outspoken Cowboys owner laughed off the possibility of NFL owners running him out of the league over his continued opposition to an extension for commissioner Roger Goodell. The compensation committee has sent Jones a cease-and-desist notice over his threats to sue the league, according to the New York Times.

“I’ve had not one, not one, inkling of communication from the league office or any owner that would suggest something that laughable and ridiculous,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday morning about the Pro Football Talk report.

“If somebody is asserting that or thinking about that kind of thing, they’re not knowledgeable on how things work in the NFL.”

Jones’ battle with the league has heightened in recent weeks with his frustration with Goodell. Falcons owner Arthur Blank pushed Jones off of the compensation committee, even though Jones’ role was an unofficial one. Blank then insisted that the long-discussed extension would go on as planned.

The criticisms around Goodell focus on his bungling of the league’s domestic violence policy and the Bountygate and Deflategate controversies.

There is thought that Jones’ motivation comes out of anger with Goodell giving Dallas’ star running back Ezekiel Elliott a six-game suspension that he finally started serving last week. Jones has denied this, even though he has been extremely critical of the league’s punishment after Elliott was accused of domestic violence by an ex-girlfriend.

“Roger has almost 18 months [left before the contract expires],” Jones said. “We’ve got all the time in the world to evaluate what we’re doing. We’ve got all the time in the world to extend him. We need to slow this train down.”
