Republican Senate leaders are reportedly exploring a last-ditch attempt to oust scandal-plagued candidate Roy Moore from the ballot and save the GOP seat from Alabama.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and others are discussing a potential plan to have current Alabama Sen. Luther Strange resign from his seat — which could trigger an entirely new special election, according to Politico.
Sources told the paper that idea is just one of a few being discussed and it was not even clear whether a new special election would be possible.
The current special election for the seat held by Strange is less than four weeks away.
The desperate move by the GOP comes as allegations of sexual harassment from women who claim they were teenagers targeted by a 30-something Moore continue to plague the candidate.
The candidate has shown no signs of backing away from the race.
A new poll by the National Republican Senatorial Committee said Moore was trailing Democratic candidate Doug Jones by 12 points.
