Brawl over birthday cake leads to deadly stabbing

A fight over a birthday cake left one man Connecticut dead and another in jail facing murder charges, reports said.

Carlos Gonzalez-Oliver, 41, is being held on a $1 million bond after police say he stabbed his housemate to death Monday night because he destroyed a birthday cake Gonzalez-Oliver purchased, the Hartford Courant reported. The housemate has not been named.

Gonzalez-Oliver told investigators he had just come home to the small rooming house he’d been living in and had bought a birthday cake for another tenant, identified only as Wilfredo, who was celebrating a birthday.

Gonzalez-Oliver said the victim had been drinking and started yelling and harassing him for no reason, even coming after him with an axe before destroying the birthday cake and throwing some of it at the door, police records state, according to the Hartford Courant.

The victim allegedly continued to try and attack Gonzalez-Oliver, who grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed the victim once, before calling a nephew to pick him up.

But the story doesn’t jive with witness accounts and Gonzalez-Oliver is being charged with murder. Witnesses told cops they never saw an axe and the victim was stabbed in the back, which means he couldn’t have been actively attacking Gonzalez-Oliver when he was killed, officers wrote in their report. Police also found Gonzalez-Oliver to have a rap sheet 20 years long with plenty of threatening and assault convictions over the years. He’s back in court on Dec. 7.
