Embattled Republican Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore’s communications director abruptly quit — but would not explain why, a new report said Wednesday.
John Rogers confirmed his resignation in a phone interview with the website Washingtonian but declined to offer any explanation.
But the move came as sexual misconduct accusations against the 70-year-old evangelical Christian continued to make headlines.
Two women accused Moore of sexually assaulting them when they were underage teenagers and another seven have said he either sexually harassed them or pressured them for dates when he was in his 30s and they were either teens or in their early 20s.
Others have offered supporting evidence, including a retired Alabama cop who told ABC News Tuesday that she was assigned to keep an eye on Moore in the 1980s because he would show up at high school football games and creep out the cheerleaders.
“We were also told to watch him at the ballgames, and make sure that he didn’t, you know, hang around with the cheerleaders,” said Faye Gary, who was an officer at the Gadsden Police Department for 37 years.
President Trump implicitly endorsed Moore on Tuesday, while slamming his opponent, Democrat Doug Jones.
“I can tell you one thing for sure: We don’t need a liberal person in there, a Democrat — Jones.”
Moore will face off against Jones on Dec. 12 to fill the Senate seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
