NYCFC clean house with sweeping roster moves

New York City FC parted ways with 11 players under contract as the team made sweeping changes to its roster Monday.

The group consists of part-time starters and role players, headlined by defenders RJ Allen, Frederic Brillant and Ethan White.

Goalkeeper Eirik Johansen, defenders Shannon Gomez and Andraz Struna, along with midfielders Miguel Camargo, Mikey Lopez and John Stertzer did not make the cut.

Forward Sean “Ugo” Okoli also had his option declined.

“New York City FC would like to thank all of the players departing the club at this time and thank each of them for their contributions,” the club said in a statement.

NYCFC exercised five player options for the 2018 season — Kwame Awuah, Ronald Matarrita, Andre Rawls, Khiry Shelton and Ben Sweat.

Allen, 27, was part of NYCFC’s inaugural season roster in 2015. The wingback started the season opener against Orlando before falling out of a favor with head coach Patrick Vieira, appearing in just 15 total matches. He could be an appetizing option for numerous teams around the league due to his positional flexibility on the wings and inside as a center back.

Alexander Callens, Maxime Chanot, Jack Harrison, Yangel Herrera, Sean Johnson, Jonathan Lewis, Maxi Moralez, Tommy McNamara, Alex Ring, James Sands, Rodney Wallace and David Villa have guaranteed contracts for next season.

Herrera’s return comes as a bit of a surprise. The talented, young midfielder played on loan from parent club Manchester City this season, but despite chatter about a potential move abroad, The Post has confirmed Herrera’s initial loan was for two seasons in New York, as first reported by NYCFC radio analyst Glenn Crooks.

As it stands, NYCFC have 17 players remaining on their roster.

The Red Bulls have completed the transfer of defender Michael Amir Murillo, the team announced Monday.

Murillo, 21, played 17 games this season and featured frequently down the stretch, when the Red Bulls were at their best.

“We are pleased to add Amir on a permanent basis,” sporting director Denis Hamlett said in a statement. “He showed well and has made progress as a player during his time here. He is building on the positive qualities we saw when we were scouting him, and we look forward to him contributing to our success moving forward.”

He was previously on loan from Panamanian side San Francisco FC.
