Lawmaker accused of sexually assaulting his daughter’s friend

The Kentucky lawmaker who gained infamy when he compared Barack Obama and his wife to monkeys has been accused of sexually assaulting a former member of his church, according to a report.

Maranda Richmond claimed state Rep. Dan Johnson assaulted her in the basement of his house on Jan. 1, 2013, according to the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting.

The Louisville-based news outlet spoke with Richmond and obtained police records that show she reported the assault in 2013, but the case was closed and charges were never filed.

Richmond, a friend of Johnson’s daughter, told the organization she went to a New Year’s Eve party at Johnson’s home on Dec. 31, 2012. She slept on the couch but was woken up in the middle of the night to find Johnson standing over her. She said he groped her, stuck his tongue in her mouth and slid his hands down her pants and into her vagina.

The woman said she begged Johnson to stop but he kept persisting, telling her she would like it before he finally left the room.

Records show Louisville police investigators recorded a phone call between Johnson and Richmond’s father in which Johnson could be heard saying he “couldn’t imagine doing that to Maranda.”

The case was closed in 2014 because “the victim refuses to cooperate,” according to records, but Richmond denies this.

“I never once did not want to continue on,” she said.

Leaders from both sides of the aisle are calling on Johnson to resign in light of the allegations.

But Republican Gov. Matt Bevin said he had not read the report and “let’s wait until we get some facts” before commenting.

Johnson has not yet responded to the allegations. A receptionist at his legislative office told the Center for Investigative Reporting he was unavailable.
