An 8-year-old New Jersey girl who committed suicide may have been inspired by a story she read on Facebook.
Investigators in Essex County are probing whether Imani McCray, who died Sunday after she was found hanging in her Vailsburg home, was copying the death of Ashawnty Davis, a 10-year-old Colorado girl, according to WNBC.
Sources told the station that Imani died in a manner similar to Ashawnty and that Imani read a story about Ashawnty’s suicide on Facebook.
Imani had been sent to her room as a punishment before the suicide. Family and paramedics tried to resuscitate her after she was found, but she died at University Hospital in Newark.
Ashawnty killed herself after she was bullied, but investigators don’t have any evidence that Imani suffered similar torment, according to NBC.
