Teens caught in video sucker-punching disabled student
A group of Atlanta teens face suspension from school after they were caught on camera beating a disabled classmate, according to reports.
Student Jaqueline Flournoy, who is hearing-impaired, said she was sucker-punched at Maynard Jackson High School in what she claimed was a hate crime, news station WSB-TV reported.
“He just turned around and slapped me. I was like, ‘OK, what just happened?’” Flournoy told WSB-TV.
In a video of the Nov. 30 incident, a male student was seen pulling Flornoy’s hair before another teen cold-cocked her.
Flournoy, 18, said the bullies were part of a trio who were making vicious comments about her speech and interracial relationship with her white boyfriend.
“I think it was hate,” Flournoy said. “They were just being spiteful and mean. They wanted to make a video about it and go viral.”
The video started to take off on social media, but not for the reasons the teens probably intended; Flournoy’s mom, Kimberly, used the footage Monday to call for an end to bullying in a Facebook post.
“Parents, [you] need to talk to your children. I mean, it’s bad enough that adults treat each other like this, but for kids to do it, they’re learning it from someone,” Kimberly Flournoy told WSB-TV.
She said the two students seen attacking her daughter will face a school tribunal Wednesday which will determine their punishment.
