We may not have the biggest solar system anymore

We should have kept Pluto a planet!

Our solar system is now engaged in a galactic battle for supremacy after scientists discovered an eighth planet circling the distant Sun-like star Kepler-90 — putting us in a tie for most number of planets around a single star.

The creatively titled Kepler-90i is a “sizzling hot, rocky planet” around 2,545 light years from Earth that orbits its star once every 14.4 days, NASA announced Thursday.

The planet is unlikely to pose other threat to the collective egos of Earth — the surface is hotter than 800 degrees Fahrenheit, so it’s probably not home to any intelligent extraterrestrial life, the agency says.

The new rock was uncovered by artificial intelligence technology that scours data collected by NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope for undetected exoplanets.

“Just as we expected, there are exciting discoveries lurking in our archived Kepler data, waiting for the right tool or technology to unearth them,” said Paul Hertz, director of NASA’s astrophysics division.
