Spike TV’s Twitter account goes ‘rogue’ ahead of rebranding

Spike TV is getting rebranded this week after nearly 15 years of being on the air — and its social media team isn’t taking it very well.

“Welp, since I’m outta here anyway I might as well tell you all the things I’ve been holding in for the past 18 years,” wrote the @spike Twitter handle on Tuesday.

“Brace yourself bros. S–t’s about to get real. #GoodbyeSpike #SpikeUnfiltered.”

In recent weeks, the team has transformed Spike’s Twitter page into a disgruntled ex-employee of sorts as it prepares to say goodbye on Thursday.

“He’s confronting an existential crisis, having a bit of a meltdown in public,” Red Fabbri, Spike TV’s vice president of fan engagement and editorial, told Adweek.

“Like someone might in the modern workplace if they got handed a pink slip.”

The fictional Twitter worker spent the better part of Tuesday joking about popular TV shows that aired on Spike over the years, things he did at the office, and other crazy stuff that went down during his time at the network.

“There’s a reason all our early shows were CSI, UFC, TNA, MXC, UTI,” they said. “No one around here knew how to read.”

Referencing Adam Carolla’s reality series from 2014, they wrote: “I honestly thought catch a contractor was a show about STDs.”

Spike is reportedly going off the air at 9 p.m. on Thursday night and is being renamed the “Paramount Network.”

“I never thought rebranding would be one of the 1000 ways to die,” the fake employee said. “I’m out. PEACE!”
