The Mets made the return of Jose Reyes official on Friday, announcing the signing of the infielder to a one-year deal.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the team designated lefty reliever Josh Smoker for assignment.
The 34-year-old Reyes is expected to serve in a utility role with the team, as the Mets continue to search for another infielder.
As of now, Asdrubal Cabrera will either serve as the starting second or third baseman.
“I’m glad to be back,” Reyes said in a statement. “This is my home. I’m excited to be back with a great group of teammates. I will do everything I can to help us get back to the postseason.”
Reyes is the franchise leader in stolen bases and triples and is second all-time in hits, runs and doubles.
Reyes, according to a source, will make $2 million with $500,000 of incentives.
Smoker, 29, pitched in 54 games for the Mets last season, finishing with a 5.11 ERA in 56 ¹/₃ innings. Despite a rough season, he was mostly effective in his final 23 games. He allowed just two earned runs in 18 ²/₃ innings after Aug. 11.
