The waiting game is finally over.
On Tuesday, the Colts announced Josh McDaniels as their next head coach, despite recent chatter the highly sought-after offensive coordinator would stay put in New England.
Following the Patriots’ 41-33 loss to the Eagles in Super Bowl LII, McDaniels was in no mood to discuss his next landing spot.
“I’m not going to talk about that tonight,” McDaniels told reporters Sunday, and the next day Bill Belichick said he had “no idea” about McDaniels’ status.
The conspiracy theory was that if Belichick is leaving the Patriots, McDaniels may want the job. But nothing has suggested so far that Belichick is moving on, and so McDaniels is.
As New England braces for an offseason of uncertainty, with Matt Patricia also vacating his post as defensive coordinator to fill the head coach vacancy in Detroit, McDaniels is hopeful his second stint in the coach’s chair goes smoother than his first. McDaniels went 11-17 in Denver, before he was fired by the Broncos in 2010 after less than two seasons.
The Colts announced McDaniels’ introductory news conference will take place Wednesday.
