Robbery victim dies months after he’s sucker-punched
A Queens man sucker-punched by a cell phone thief in September died from his injury five months later — and his attackers now face potential murder charges, authorities said on Tuesday.
The 66-year-old victim, Mohamaad Alam, was talking on his cell phone in front of MIM Wireless, at 167-05 Hillside Ave. in Jamaica around 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 28, when a stranger yanked his phone from his ear and ran off, police said.
Surveillance footage released by the police in October shows Alam running after the brazen phone thief, identified by police as Jaleel Steele.
But as Alam reaches the doorway of the technology store, he is viciously punched by a second man, Shyquan Kimble, wearing a blue and white striped sweatshirt.
The startling video shows Kimble kicking the Elmhurst man after he falls to the ground.
Alam was admitted to Elmhurst Hospital in critical condition with a severe head injury. He died there Jan. 31.
Police arrested Kimble and Steele, both 16, in October and charged them at the time with two counts of robbery and assault.
Authorities will decide whether or not to charge the men with murder at their March 1 court appearance.
