When it comes to skincare, people generally fall into one of two camps: those who are all about techy formulations and the latest developments and then those who follow a traditional routine, using age-old techniques and traditional products.
Dating as far back as 6th century China, jade rollers fall firmly in the latter. The green stone, which is believed to have healing and protective properties, was originally used as an anti-wrinkle and anti-aging beauty tool to promote a youthful appearance and smooth skin.
Like most beauty products that have stuck around (hello, rosehip oil), the science behind it is simple: it’s made from an oblong stone of pure jade, around 3cm long, that’s attached to a handle with a metal frame, a bit like a paint roller (we love Lux Aestiva Jade Face Roller, $29). Some versions are dual-ended, with a smaller stone on the opposite end for use on smaller areas, like around the eyes.
But aside from looking good in an Instagram post, do they actually do anything?
According to celebrity facialist and owner of Venustus, Jeannie Bourke, while they’re not new, how they’re now being used is.
“A facial massage helps give your overworked facial muscles a rest which can help loosen up spots where wrinkles pop up, similar to how a deep tissue massage leaves your body feeling relaxed and refreshed.”
And it does so through improving blood circulation to the area via lymphatic drainage, heralded as the most effective way to de-puff your face, calm the skin, eliminate toxins and promote elasticity.
“They give your serums time to absorb. The gentle pressure and motion helps ingredients soak in, better so they can penetrate deeper into the skin and in turn, work harder,” explains Bourke, who also uses them during their Crystal Cryotherapy Facial and to soothe any irritation post-waxing.
Although there isn’t a hard and fast rule when it comes to technique, jade is best served ice cold — straight from the fridge — to help de-puff the eye area in particular.
Bottom line? Say goodbye to cucumber slices, the jade roller has earned its renaissance.
