Mom storms off after elite prospect chooses Florida

One of the best wide receivers in the country decided he wanted to play for Florida. His mom decided she didn’t want anything to do with that.

Jacob Copeland, a four-star wide receiver from Pensacola, Fla., had three hats on the table for his National Signing Day decision —Alabama, Florida and Tennessee. His mom, sitting next to him, was wearing a Tennessee toque and an Alabama sweatshirt.

When Copeland, the No. 12 wide receiver in the country, picked up the Florida hat, his mother stood up, gave him a couple of menacing glances and walked away from the table they were seated at. The woman next to his mom, who was wearing an Alabama shirt, put her head in her hands and also got up from the table.

“I don’t know why she walked away,” Copeland said during the live ESPN broadcast. “I can’t go with my mom, I gotta go with my heart.”

This isn’t the first time a family member hasn’t been happy with a prospect’s decision on national television. A year ago, five-star defensive back Darnay Holmes made his college decision live at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

He chose UCLA, but his nephew, who clearly wanted him to chose Ohio State, stole the show.
