A Brooklyn landlord has been impersonating a dead notary public — using the man’s official stamp and signature on court documents in a macabre bid to give his tenants the boot, authorities said Monday.
Abdus Shahid forged nearly 30 documents using the identity of late public notary Yitzchok Ring, who died in October 2014, prosecutors said, in order to file civil eviction suits against his tenants, alleging they’d damaged his property.
Shahid is now charged with 28 counts of forgery, 28 counts of offering a false instrument for filing, and 28 counts of making an apparently sworn false statement.
Shahid, 64, who owns 455 Tompkins Ave. in Bedford-Stuyvesant, filed the paperwork against his tenants after they called 311 to complain about his properties, according to prosecutors.
“This defendant attempted to fool the court by using someone else’s identity for his nefarious business plans,” Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said in a statement. “I am committed to protecting the rights of [Brooklyn’s] residents.”
Shahid was arraigned Friday and released without bail.
