Jared Kushner has security clearance downgraded

Jared Kushner, President Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law, has had his security clearance downgraded, a move that will prevent him from viewing many classified documents, according to a report Tuesday.

Kushner, who is married to Trump’s daughter Ivanka, is among a number of White House aides who were informed last Friday in a memo that their high-level interim clearances would be lowered to “secret” level, according to Politico.

They had been working with Top Secret/SCI-level clearances.

The SCI acronym stands for sensitive compartmentalized information, a category of information that comes from the most sensitive intelligence sources.

The memo wasn’t signed by White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, who had vowed to eliminate interim security clearances dating back to the start of the administration.

Trump has the ability to authorize a clearance for his son-in-law, but has said he was leaving the decision up to Kelly.

“I will let General Kelly make that decision,” Trump told reporters last week. “I have no doubt he’ll make the right decision.”

Earlier Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders wouldn’t comment directly on Kushner’s security standing.

“He’s a valued member of the team and he will continue to do the important work that he’s been doing since he’s started in the administration,” she said.

Kushner’s attorney Abbe Lowell said in a statement that his client “has done more than what is expected of him in this process.”
