Dez Bryant could have been a hero, and the Cowboys might have actually ended their decade-long NFC Championship drought.
The NFL opened the door to that possibility in hindsight after the competition committee ruled Tuesday that Bryant’s controversial catch in the Cowboys’ 2015 divisional game against the Packers should never have been called back as incomplete. What would have been a completion at the one-yard line with Dallas down 26-21 and four minutes left was snatched away and the climb proved insurmountable.
The Packers held onto that lead to seal the victory and the Cowboys have not made it past the divisional round since, with their last conference championship appearance coming in 1995.
A group of NFL owners have come to a consensus three years later that Packers-Cowboys never should have come to that potentially game-changing decision because Bryant did in fact maintain control of the ball as he came to the ground. The same goes for Calvin Johnson’s infamous non-catch call in 2010 —Â though the jury’s still out on Jesse James’ non-touchdown against the Patriots last season, the play that reignited the discussion around the league’s tenuous catch rule.
“I think where we are unanimous [are] plays like the Dez Bryant play in Green Bay, going to the ground, the Calvin Johnson play from a couple of years ago,” Giants co-owner John Mara told ESPN after a meeting among competition committee members in Indianapolis. “I think all of us agree that those should be completions. So let’s write the language to make them completions.”
Though Mara is on the side of including James’ catch in the category with Bryant’s and Johnson’s, others are not, but they at least are all in agreement that the language of the rule needs to be clearer to avoid the inconsistency that has plagued the league over the years.
Commissioner Roger Goodell has expressed hope the committee will pass a new rule before the start of next season that ends the confusion around a player’s ability to maintain possession while “going to the ground.”
“The Jesse James play, I think should be a completion, but I’m not sure we’re unanimous on that,” Mara said. “But plays where guys seem to make the catch and then make a football move with it, I think most of us agree those should be completions. Now it’s just a question of coming up with the right language.”
The improved rule could be in place by the end of next month, if the committee comes up with a proposal in time for the league meetings March 25-28, but Mara wouldn’t go so far as to promise that expediency.
“We’re going to try,” he said.
