At least 40 threats against schools in the New York City area — including several “credible” ones — have been reported to the FBI since the deadly Florida shooting, authorities said Tuesday.
“Everyone’s calling in school threats,” said Bill Sweeney, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s New York division.
“There’s a couple that are credible,” he said. “But we don’t dismiss anything outright.
“Obviously some of these are not legit threats, but we’re going to take it that way until we prove otherwise,” he said.
In a normal week, there are “a handful” of reported threats against schools, Sweeney said. But spikes always occur after a serious attack. He noted that the agency was flooded with reports of suspicious activity and items after the Chelsea bombing in 2016 and last year’s deadly terror attack on a West Side bike path.
