The Jets are doing their homework on Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Mayfield told themmqb.com that in addition to meeting with the Jets last week at the NFL Scouting Combine, he will take a visit to the team’s Florham Park headquarters and they plan on working him out in Norman at some point.
The Jets have the No. 6 pick in next month’s draft and a gaping hole at quarterback. They are targeting top free agent Kirk Cousins, but if they miss out on the former Redskin, they likely will draft a quarterback in the first round of the draft.
Mayfield, who won the Heisman Trophy last year, is a polarizing prospect. His on-field talent can’t be denied, but there are questions about his off-field attitude and his height (just 6 feet).
In addition to the Jets, Mayfield told themmqb.com that he has private visits lined up with the Giants and Browns. The Browns, Dolphins and Saints plan to have a workout with him in Norman.
The Jets’ interest in Mayfield is not surprising. Between now and the draft, they will likely workout and have a visit with every top quarterback in the draft. They did it last year with Deshaun Watson and Mitch Trubisky, but ended up drafting neither one.
