President Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort pleaded not guilty Thursday to money laundering and tax evasion charges as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.
He is accused of laundering millions of dollars he was paid by Viktor F. Yanukovich, a former Ukrainian president with ties to the Kremlin.
He entered the plea in federal court in Virginia.
A trial was set for July 10.
Manafort is facing two criminal indictments from Mueller – one in Virginia and one in Washington, D.C.
The charges against him and business associate Rick Gates include funneling money through foreign banks into properties in the United States as a way to shield the money from the Internal Revenue Service, making false statements and working as unregistered foreign agents.
Gates has pleaded guilty and is cooperating with Mueller’s probe.
