Bodycam shows cops open fire on unarmed black man

Body camera footage shows the moment Sacramento police open fire on an unarmed black man, killing him in a flurry of bullets.

Stephan Alonzo Clark, 22, was shot as many as 20 times by two police officers who chased him into the back yard of his grandparents’ home Sunday night.

“Hey! Show me your hands! Stop, stop!” one of the officers yells on the footage, which is mostly dark except for the glow of a cop’s flashlight.

He then yells, “Show me your hands! Gun, gun, gun!” before he and the other cop squeeze off multiple shots in rapid succession.

Police said Clark, a dad of two boys ages 1 and 3, was caught breaking into three cars and shattering the glass door of a neighbor’s home.

The officers said they believed Clark was armed with a gun and that they opened fire because they feared for their lives.

Just after the shooting, one of the officers says he saw “something in his left hand, it looked like a gun from our perspectives,” according to the footage.

They waited five minutes until other officers arrived to handcuff and give medical treatment to Clark, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Sacramento Police Department released both cops’ bodycam footage Wednesday, as well as a video taken by the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department’s helicopter, which was flying overhead at the time, and audio from a 911 call and dispatch.

Mayor Darrell Steinberg said he was “heartbroken for our city” but commended Police Chief Daniel Hahn for the swift release of the videos and audio.

“I viewed the videos carefully,” Steinberg said in a statement on Twitter. “Based on the videos alone, I cannot second guess the split-second decisions of our officers and I’m not going to do that. The investigation must be completed. We need more information in addition to the video before we can render any final conclusions.”
