Crew chief Jerry Meals admitted his crew botched a call in the sixth inning when Giancarlo Stanton was called out in a run down after he ran past third base and down the left-field line while Gary Sanchez was standing on third.
Sanchez wasn’t called out and Buck Showalter argued that the umpires got it wrong.
“We were incorrect. The ruling is that when a runner from second, in that situation, when a runner from second has occupied third and the lead runner goes beyond third base to the outfield or wherever, runs past it, the interpretation is the runner from second is passed that runner, the lead runner, so he is out automatically without being tagged,’’ Meals said after the Orioles beat the Yankees, 7-3 in 14 innings Friday night at Yankee Stadium. “Sanchez should have been out automatically for passing Stanton.’’
The Yankees couldn’t take advantage of the break. Ronald Torreyes grounded out to end the inning without a run coming home.
