Red Bulls’ CONCACAF dream dashed after frustrating draw

The Red Bulls won’t be the first MLS team to win the CONCACAF Champions League.

In front of a raucous crowd reported at more than 23,000 Tuesday night at Red Bull Arena, the Red Bulls outshot Chivas Guadalajara 20-1, but tied 0-0 and lost the semifinal on a 1-0 aggregate.

The Red Bulls peppered Chivas goalie Rodolfo Cota with shot after shot, including one final header by Aaron Long in stoppage time, but couldn’t break through as he made eight saves.

In the 18th minute, the Red Bulls had a scoring chance when Daniel Royer slid a pass into the box to the right leg of Kemar Lawrence, who just missed connecting.

In the 28th minute, Derrick Etienne rose above a crowd to get his head on a cross, but the attempt sailed over the crossbar. The Red Bulls had an 11-0 advantage in shots in the first half.

Chivas took the first leg 1-0 on a goal by Isaac Brizuela on Wednesday in Guadalajara, Mexico.

With the semifinal victory, Chivas advances to the final, where it will meet either the MLS’s Toronto FC or Club America, which faced off later Tuesday in Mexico City.
