The lawyer for the porn star who said she had an affair with Donald Trump trolled the president in a tweet Tuesday for calling an FBI raid on his personal lawyer Michael Cohen a “witch hunt.”
“A well-regarded Republican appointed US Atty obtaining valid search warrants, approved by a judge, that are then then carried out by career, upstanding FBI agents doing their job to search for the truth is NOT A WITCH HUNT. Period. #basta,” Michael Avenatti, the lawyer for Stormy Daniels, wrote on Twitter.
Trump also turned to Twitter early Tuesday to continue airing his rage at the FBI’s Monday raid on Cohen’s office, home and hotel room, where he had been staying.
The feds, working on a referral from special counsel Robert Mueller, who’s investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and any possible collusion on the part of the Trump campaign, seized documents and records about various legal matters, including payments made to Daniels.
The search warrants were executed by federal prosecutors in the Manhattan US Attorney’s Office, which is led by Trump appointee Geoffrey Berman.
Trump, in Tuesday’s tweet and during a White House meeting Monday, slammed federal prosecutors for carrying out the raid on Cohen.
“Attorney-client privilege is dead,” Trump wrote to his 50 million followers, adding a minute later: ”A TOTAL WITCH HUNT!!!”
Avenatti has been locked in a legal battle with Cohen over a $130,000 payment Cohen made to Daniels less than two weeks before the 2016 election as part of a “hush agreement” to keep her quiet about the alleged affair.
Avenatti said the nondisclosure agreement is invalid because Trump, identified in the legal document as David Dennison, never signed it.
