Yoenis Cespedes’ only strikeout Wednesday night was with his chain necklace.
The Mets slugger was visibly upset when he got up from sliding into second on a double during the first inning of the Mets’ 7-0 loss to the Braves, as he shook off his necklace and found that diamonds were falling off into the dirt. Once he pulled it off his neck and watched it break apart in his hand, Cespedes frowned and chucked the small, remaining piece he held to the ground.
It is possible Cespedes’ chain tangled with Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies’ foot on the play. Albies jumped up to avoid Cespedes as the Mets outfielder slid into the bag, but his feet didn’t fully clear Cespedes’ head.
Asdrubal Cabrera played the good teammate in the next half inning, picking up the diamonds one by one to deliver to Cespedes before taking his position at second base.
“Well, the cleanup is underway after Yoenis Cespedes’ necklace exploded,” SNY play-by-play man Gary Cohen noted on air. “Asdrubal Cabrera, who has done everything for this team this year, now doing the housekeeping, as well.”
Cespedes, who has racked up an eight-game hitting streak, failed to get on base after the first-inning double.
