TV presenter suspended after calling her colleague ‘handsome’
A TV presenter has been suspended from her job in Kuwait after jokingly calling a male colleague “handsome” live on air.
The unnamed journalist landed herself in hot water while fronting coverage of the strict nation’s municipal elections for state television.
As she was handing over to the colleague, she joked he should stop fiddling with his headwear as he was “already handsome” enough.
What would be seen as normal banter on Western TV did not go down well with her bosses at the station — which is run by the Ministry of Information.
The clip of their exchange, which has been widely shared on social media, has clearly upset politicians in the woman’s homeland.
Kuwait MP Mohammad Al Hayef tweeted the country’s minister of information, calling on him “to take action against the TV host,” Stepfeed reports.
The unnamed host was promptly suspended by the government channel, pending a full investigation into last weekend’s incident.
The issue has divided Twitter users, with some supporting the government’s tough stance while others are outraged that it is getting so worked up over a harmless comment.
“Leave housing problems, leave problems of corruption, leave health problems, leave problems of education…and cut the livelihood of an announcer who said to her colleague ‘you are handsome”!,” one Twitter user wrote.
