WASHINGTON – A top North Korean official has arrived at the White House to meet with President Trump and hand-deliver a note from leader Kim Jong Un.
Former North Korean military intelligence chief Kim Yong Chol was welcomed to the White House Friday afternoon in a signal of a major thaw of US-North Korean relations.
He’s the most senior North Korean official to visit the United States since 2000.
Kim Yong Chol spent the last two days in New York City in talks with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in an effort to get the Singapore summit back on track for June 12.
Trump abruptly canceled the planned summit on May 24 and issued an open letter to Kim Jong Un, starting off “Dear Mr. Chairman.”
But Trump later said the summit was still a possibility following conciliatory statements from the North.
The Trump administration has been looking for North Korea to agree to complete denuclearization.
