Former US attorney Preet Bharara has registered to vote as a Democrat for the first time in more than a decade, sparking speculation that he may enter the race for attorney general, according to a report on Thursday.
Bharara, who was fired by President Donald Trump soon after entering the White House, registered in Westchester County during the window of time for candidates to gather signatures to qualify for September’s primary election, the New York Times reported.
He would join other candidates running for the spot, including Public Advocate Letitia James, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, former governor candidate Zephyr Teachout and former adviser to Hillary Clinton Leecia Eve.
Eric Schneiderman resigned as attorney general last month after he was accused of sexually abusing a number of women.
Barbara Underwood was named to replace Schneiderman, but she will not seek election to the position.
Bharara was not registered to vote when he served as Manhattan US attorney from 2009 to 2017.
He was previously registered in New York and Maryland, the report said.
