Build-a-Bear ‘Pay Your Age’ promotion turns into total chaos
They bearly survived.
Throngs of frustrated, tot-toting parents stood for hours in long lines at Build-A-Bear workshops in New York City and throughout the US, Britain and Canada on Thursday for an ill-planned “Pay Your Age Day” promotion that in some locations led to violence.
Outright brawls were reported among angry people waiting on line in Newcastle, England, The Sun reported.
Staffers were assaulted in front of waiting children at a Build-A-Bear in Belfast, Northern Ireland, according to multiple tweets.
Under the first-ever promotion, the minimum price for a basic bear was $1 and the maximum was $29. Basic bears typically start at $15-$20.
In New York, hundreds queued up early at the stores on 34th Street in Manhattan and at the Staten Island Mall, only to leave empty-handed.
“There’s people who have been out here for seven hours with their babies!” mom Nicole Castro hollered at a store employee outside the 34th Street store at 3 p.m., according to NBC news.
“It’s insane,” parent Anthony Suarez told the Staten Island Advance of the day-long wait for a bear.
The deal was so good, that stores could only accommodate a fraction of the bear-hungry hordes.
By 10:45 a.m. Eastern time, the chain tweeted an “Urgent Alert” saying that for “safety concerns” all lines were being closed — resulting in tantrums among toddlers and parents alike.
“Based on the unprecedented response to our Pay Your Age Day event in our early opening stores, we are experiencing significantly longer than expected lines and large crowds,” Build-A-Bear said in a statement on its website.
“Local authorities are requiring us to limit the lines and crowds due to safety concerns. We understand this is disappointing, we are working to address the situation, and we will be reaching out to our valued Guests soon.”
The disappointed were given vouchers toward a future purchase.
