President Donald Trump shared a “nice note” from North Korea’s Kim Jong Un that said their summit last month started them on a “meaningful journey” and expressed hope that their improved relationship would lead to another get-together.
“Wishing that the invariable trust and confidence in Your Excellency Mr. President will be further strengthened in the future process of taking practical actions,” Kim wrote to Trump, who posted an image of the letter on his Twitter page Thursday. “I extend my conviction that the epochal progress in promoting DPRK-US relations will bring our next meeting forward.”
Kim used the abbreviation for North Korea’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
“I deeply appreciate the energetic and extraordinary efforts made by Your Excellency Mr. President for the improvement of relations between the two countries and the faithful implementation of the joint statement,” said the letter, signed by Kim and dated July 6.
That’s the day Secretary of State Mike Pompeo traveled to Pyongyang to discuss the denuclearization agreement Trump and Kim signed at the June 12 Singapore summit.
Kim didn’t meet personally with Pompeo, and North Korea later issued a statement criticizing the US for “gangster-like” behavior in making demands for ensuring the regime got rid of its nuclear arsenal.
