The Pro Football Hall of Fame is giving Terrell Owens the silent treatment.
Owens won’t be individually mentioned next month at the Hall of Fame ceremony he decided not to attend.
Hall of Fame executive director Jim Horrigan said Owens will be sent the gold jacket after the ceremony instead. The six-time Pro Bowler will be mentioned, though, when the Hall of Fame class is talked about as a group.
“The focus is on the guys who are here,” Horrigan said on Talk of Fame Sports Network. “There’s no reason to bring him up as an individual. He’s not here.”
The former 49ers, Eagles and Cowboys wide receiver announced last month he would skip the induction in favor of celebrating the occasion at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he played college football.
“After giving it much thought, I have realized just how much I want to celebrate what will inevitably be the best weekend of my life at a place that means so much to me,” Owens said in a statement on Twitter.
Owens was elected to the Hall of Fame in February after missing out in his previous two years of eligibility. This year’s class will be inducted Aug. 4.
Owens ranks second in career receiving yards behind Jerry Rice and third in career touchdown receptions with 153.
He was drafted in the third round by San Francisco and played there for seven years before he was traded to the Eagles over a dispute with the front office. He played two seasons in Philadelphia and three in Dallas before ending his career with brief stops in Buffalo and Cincinnati.
