Iran dismissed President Trump’s ominous, all-caps tweet on Monday — saying it was “unimpressed” by the late-night Twitter threat.
“The world heard even harsher bluster a few months ago,” wrote Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in a tweet of his own.
“COLOR US UNIMPRESSED,” he said.
The response comes less than a day after Trump fired off his aggressive Twitter warning to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who had issued a similar threat on Sunday.
“America should know that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, and war with Iran is the mother of all wars,” Rouhani told a group of Iranian diplomats, according to Reuters.
The statement appeared to spark Trump’s all-caps tweet late Sunday night.
“To Iranian President Rouhani: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE,” Trump said. “WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!”
Foreign Minister Zarif also went the all-caps route in his Twitter response on Monday, quoting the president’s exact words.
“BE CAUTIOUS!” Zarif tweeted. “We’ve been around for millennia & seen fall of empires, incl our own, which lasted more than the life of some countries.”
His comment about the world hearing “even harsher bluster just a few months ago” appeared to be a direct jab at Trump over his decision to engage in a “mission of peace” summit with North Korea after threatening “fire and fury” on the rogue nation “like the world has never seen.”
Tensions have been rising between the US and Iran for months following the president’s decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal and restore sanctions on Tehran.
“Mr Trump, don’t play with the lion’s tail,” Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told diplomats on Sunday. “This would only lead to regret.”
