Attorney General Jeff Sessions now thinks he could have turned a “Lock Her Up!” chant into a teachable moment.
Sessions was addressing a high school-age crowd on Tuesday when his speech prompted a “Lock Her Up!” chant — a popular Trump campaign rally cheer to describe imprisoning Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Sessions laughed and repeated “lock her up,” too, noting how it was a slogan he often heard on the campaign trail.
At an event in Boston on Thursday, Sessions was asked about the appropriateness of the nation’s top law enforcement official saying those words in front of a group of students.
“I perhaps should’ve taken a moment to advise them of the fact that … you’re presumed innocent until cases are made,” Sessions responded, according to MassLive.com.
The attorney general called the kids, in D.C. for Turning Point USA’s High School Leadership Summit, an “enthusiastic” bunch who “spontaneously” started the “Lock Her Up!” chant.
“It was a great event to be with those kids and that would be my answer to you,” Sessions said.
