Lionsgate, Universal Music ink TV deal

Lionsgate and Universal Music Group are looking to the small screen.

The companies on Monday announced a multiyear first-look television deal under which they will develop original scripted and unscripted television projects drawn from UMG’s portfolio of labels, music and artists — like Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga.

Details of the agreement were not disclosed.

The deal marks the first time the two companies worked together on a TV deal.

Lionsgate and will team up with UMG’s film and TV production division, Polygram. It will draw inspiration from the music company’s labels such as Capitol, Def Jam, Interscope, Island, Republic and Universal Music Nashville.

UMG will also produce soundtrack albums associated with projects created under the deal, it said.

The partnership builds on Lionsgate and UMG’s track record with film scores and soundtracks including “La La Land” (Interscope), “Hunger Games” (Republic) and “Divergent” (Interscope).

The partnership with Lionsgate comes a week after UMG parent Vivendi said it is looking to sell up to half of the world’s No. 1 music label to one or more strategic partners — and is scrapping plans for an initial public offering.
