Former President Trump lawyer Michael Cohen on Tuesday copped a plea deal with Manhattan federal prosecutors investigating campaign finance violations involving Cohen’s payments to women on behalf of Trump, sources told The Post.
The deal also involves accusations of bank fraud and tax evasion, sources said.
The deal includes jail time and a fine, sources told CNN. Cohen wanted three years behind bars, but prosecutors were looking for more — 50 months, a source said. He also was worried about how much money he would have to pay as punishment, but the feds warned him that if he went to trial and was found guilty, the tab would be a lot more, sources said.
The US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York has been probing Cohen — who once bragged he’d “take a bullet” for Trump.
There had been speculation that the deal would include Cohen cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election peddling, including whether Trump’s camp had any involvement.
But sources told CNN and the New York Times that there is no cooperation deal.
Cohen gave a long sigh as he walked into 26 Manhattan Federal Plaza to surrender to the feds Tuesday afternoon.
He is expected to appear before Judge William Pauley III in the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Courthouse at 4 p.m.
Trump has tried to distance himself from Cohen since an April 9 raid on the lawyer’s home office and hotel room. The president blasted Cohen in recent weeks for secretly recording their conversations, including one discussing the payment of hush money to a porn star.
The feds are probing whether the porn star payments violated campaign finance rules, as well as more than $20 million in loans obtained by Cohen’s family’s taxi business.
Prosecutors declined comment, and Cohen’s lawyer, Lanny Davis, did not respond to a request for comment.
