A man was found fatally shot in the head in the back seat of a BMW outside a Queens auto shop and has been identified, police said Monday.
The body of Darryl Whitfield, 26, of Queens was discovered about 7 a.m. in a car parked behind an AutoZone on Northern Boulevard near Junction Boulevard in Jackson Heights, authorities said.
A worker at the shop found the body and called 911, police sources said.
The gray sedan, with New Jersey license plates and a flat rear tire, was parked in AutoZone’s customer parking lot, which has spaces for about ten vehicles and is accessible via nearby 95th Street.
An AutoZone worker described the gruesome scene Sunday morning.
“There was a lot of blood and brains next to the car,” the employee, who declined to give his name, said. “I had to clean it up. It was nasty.”
He added that there had been “mob stuff” going on in the neighborhood recently.
The city Medical Examiner’s Office has declared his death a homicide and that Whitfield had been shot.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
