At this rate, Chipper Jones is going to be a fan favorite in Queens.
The longtime Mets nemesis is continuing to support Jacob deGrom’s Cy Young candidacy, even shaming trolls on Twitter this weekend.
Responding to Max Scherzer defender Jay Richardson, who directed his taunt at “Larry,” Jones did his best imitation of a die-hard Mets fan.
“Let this sink in Jay Rich,” the recently inducted Hall of Fame member wrote Sunday. “deGrom just had a top 10 season OF ALL TIME. Try to take ur bias out of it when deciding who is more deserving. U might be right on Scherzer. Helluva yr. appreciate the Larry reference. Let’s me know ur unsure and immature. Twitter clown! Bye now.”
Originally, Jones — forever branded as a Mets killer from his many seasons in Atlanta, ending in 2012 — had stood up for deGrom on Wednesday. The Cy Young debate has been heated, as deGrom has probably been the best pitcher judging by most metrics — but not in wins (he finished 10-9).
“Jacob deGrom should be the NL Cy Young winner!” Jones declared. “He is the best pitcher in the National League this yr. Scherzer and Nola have had outstanding yrs on better teams, but JDG has dominated all yr with or without run support.”
Jones and deGrom do have a bit of history: Both are from DeLand, Fla.
