A mother of five is in custody after police found her 1-year-old daughter dead and the girl’s twin brother with horrific injuries, including broken ribs, inside a Queens home, authorities said Thursday.
The tragic discovery was made after the 30-year-old mom, Tina Torabi, called 911 just before 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Cops found 1-year-old Elaina unconscious inside the basement apartment on Ashby Avenue in Flushing — and her brother with “severe body trauma,” police said.
Elaina was rushed to Flushing Hospital but could not be saved. She was pronounced dead around 10:30 p.m.
Police sources said her injuries included bruising to the back of her head and genitals, a large wound on her abdomen and blisters and open lesions all over her body.
Her twin brother, Keon, was taken to Cohen Children’s Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition, police said.
He suffered multiple broken ribs, bruises on his groin, a broken hip, lacerated liver and severe swelling to his abdomen, police sources said. More lacerations were found all over his body.
The twins’ three older sisters — Mila, 2, Nadia, 4, and Ariana, 5 — were also in the home at the time and were taken to Flushing Hospital. They are now in the care of the city’s Administration for Children’s Services.
Mila was found with a small burn on her right ankle, police sources said.
The children’s father was not home at the time, cops said.
Torabi was being grilled by cops early Thursday at the 111th Precinct. Charges are pending, sources said.
Neighbors on the block were stunned.
Juadanna Cavallo said Torabi was overcome with grief after police showed up Wednesday night.
“She was completely distraught and falling down to her knees in the pavement,” Cavallo said.
She described Torabi as the “most beautiful, vivacious, outgoing and friendly” person who “absolutely adored her children.”
“They are always well kept and nicely dressed and well-taken care of and I had never seen anything or heard anything of the type and I’m outside walking the neighborhood all the time,” Cavallo said.
The neighbor added, “I know the family that owns the home that she lives with. I’ve known them for many years and, including herself, they are devout practicing Muslims and beautiful people.”
Another neighbor, Danny, who’s lived on the block for 20 years, said the mom was “relatively new” to the area and that the owner of the home had lived there for about 15 years.
“My wife comforted them [the kids] as they were crying,” he said. “They put them in ambulances and took them away.”
“They very much kept to themselves,” he said.
Public records list the owner as Reza Razavi.
“I saw them like a couple months ago,” Razavi said about Torabi and her children. “I’m also shocked to hear the news.”
He said Torabi was having “personal” issues but declined to elaborate.
“As far as I know, she lived alone with five kids,” Razavi said. “I was just helping her out to get out of her mess.”
