Jeremy Allen White (“Shameless”) and Maika Monroe (“It Follows”) shine in this dramedy about a young couple, Elliot and Mia, whose early courtship is rocked by his cancer diagnosis.
Unfortunately, the two actors are better than the screenplay, which speeds through Elliot’s diagnosis (Marisa Tomei appears briefly as his oncologist) and treatment, then loses its footing as the hastily married couple tries to navigate an ordinary relationship that began in crisis.
Feature debut writer/directors Hannah Marks and Joey Power have an interesting spin on the typical boy-meets-girl story, but get sucked into the cliché pitfalls of a New York drinking montage and the dreaded on-screen text conversation, one of the worst developments of the modern romance film.
Still, it marks a promising, if flawed, start for this directing duo.
