USA Gymnastics boss is out over Kaepernick tweet, Nassar link

That’s two in two months.

Mary Bono resigned from USA Gymnastics on Tuesday, four days after she was named interim CEO of the organization. She had taken the reins from CEO Kerry Perry, who resigned on Sept. 4 after just nine months in control.

Bono had come under fire both for her background (being part of the firm that represented USA Gymnastics as allegations mounted against Larry Nassar) and her beliefs (publicly scolding Nike for aligning with Colin Kaepernick).

After tweeting a picture of her drawing over the Nike logo on a golf shoe, Olympic star Simone Biles criticized her Saturday. In Bono’s statement of resignation, she said she didn’t “better clarify my feelings” about Kaepernick and Nike.

“With respect to Mr. Kaepernick, he nationally exercised his first amendment right to kneel. I exercised mine,” she said.

Bono, who spent 15 years as a US Representative from California from 1998-2013 and has a background in gymnastics, was appointed Friday. She had worked for Faegre Daniels Consulting, a law firm that housed a lawyer who worked with Nassar to think up excuses why the disgraced doctor couldn’t represent USA Gymnastics as Nassar was being investigated.

“Why hire someone associated with the firm that helped cover up our abuse?” Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman wrote on Twitter on Monday.
