Heavy rains, winds pound NYC as nor’easter blows into region

Heavy rains and powerful winds are pounding the city Saturday as the center of a nor’easter powered by the remnants of Hurricane Willa blows into the tri-state region.

The worst of the drenching should end by midday, leaving the city soaked with more than an inch of rain and wind gusts between 30 and 40 mph.

“As it approaches this morning the winds are going to turn pretty gusty at times,” said Evan Duffey, an AccuWeather meteorologist. “It’s going to be a tough day to use the umbrella.”

The strongest downpours should taper off at around 2 p.m., gradually weakening into a drizzle that will last until late Saturday, Duffey said.

As of early Saturday, ConEd is reporting more than 1,800 customers out of service.

New York beaches could see a sloshing of coastal flooding this morning when high tide hits around 10:15 a.m.

Temperatures will hover in the mid-40s Saturday night, killing the chances of snowfall.

The storm is forecast to die down by Sunday and give way to some sunshine, Duffey said.
