Longtime members of New York’s congressional delegation are about to cash in on the Democratic takeover of the House.
Rep. Nita Lowey (Westchester) is expected to become chair of the Appropriations Committee, where she’ll have oversight over the $1.3 trillion budget.
She says she’ll prioritize infrastructure spending and protecting funding for ObamaCare, Medicare and Social Security. But one project not on her list is President Trump’s wall with Mexico.
“I have supported lots of resources for securing the border, but I don’t think, after many briefings, that the border wall will do the job,” Lowey told The Post.
Rep. Jerrold Nadler (Manhattan-Brooklyn) is in line to become chair of the powerful Judiciary Committee, where he plans to probe Trump’s policies on immigration, gun control and voting rights.
Rep. Nydia Velazquez (Brooklyn) will likely become chair of the Small Business Committee.
Rep. Eliot Engel (The Bronx) is poised to head the Committee on Foreign Affairs, where he intends to ensure the secretary of state no longer keeps the committee in the dark about dealings with North Korea, Saudi Arabia and Russia.
Rep. Carolyn Maloney (Manhattan) will be a high-ranking official on the Oversight Committee, under expected chair Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.).
“I can’t remember another time when so many New Yorkers at one time are ascending to important positions in the Congress,” Engel said.
