Gannett quietly cutting staff through early retirement packages
Gannett, the parent of USA Today, has been quietly thinning its ranks through voluntary early retirement packages. Rumors are swirling that the voluntary buyouts are just a preliminary to further deep cuts expected to take place early in the new year.
At the Record in Bergen County, NJ, which has seen hundreds laid off since the North Jersey Media Group was acquired by Gannett in 2016, another 10 people took a buyout this time. The deadline was Dec. 10, sources tell Media Ink, although the company has until Dec. 22 to say whether the buyouts will be accepted.
Repeated calls to Gannett in recent days were not returned.
