Michelle Obama after Trump’s inauguration: ‘Bye, Felicia!’
Michelle Obama says she had two words on her mind as she left the White House for the last time in 2017: “Bye, Felicia!”
The former first lady made the remark — a quote from the 1995 film “Friday” that is commonly used to dismiss a person or situation — on NBC’s “Tonight Show” Tuesday, when host Jimmy Fallon asked her to “walk me through” a photo showing her smiling and waving goodbye with her husband from the steps of Air Force One following President Trump’s inauguration.
“Bye, Felicia!” she quipped, causing Fallon to double over in laughter and the audience to erupt in cheers.
“Is that what was going through your mind?” Fallon asked.
“A lot was going on that day,” Obama replied. “That was a day.”
Obama, who was on the show to discuss her memoir “Becoming,” also revealed that on the day before the inauguration, her daughters’ friends decided they “needed” a final sleepover in the White House.
“’Are you guys kidding me?’” Obama said, recalling her reaction. “‘We’re leaving. You gotta take all your stuff, pick it up. The blankets, the bears.’ They’re all crying, and it was like, ‘Get out. We’ve got to go.'”
The stress continued on inauguration day, Obama said.
“Then the Tiffany’s box,” she said, referencing the now-viral moment when she was caught looking puzzled by a gift from new first lady Melania Trump outside the White House.
“It’s just all, you know, a lot,” Obama concluded.
