Man arrested months after allegedly beating would-be burglar to death

A Queens man was arrested months after he allegedly beat a would-be burglar to death with a baseball bat, authorities said.

Joel Paul, 27, was busted Monday after he was indicted in the death of Shamel Shavuo, a 26-year-old who tried pushing his way into Paul’s Williamson Avenue home in late July, police said.

Paul was charged with manslaughter and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. Additional details about his indictment were not immediately available.

He and his 16-year-old brother answered a knock at their front door around 2:45 a.m. July 30 while they were waiting for a Domino’s pizza delivery, police sources told The Post at the time.

When Paul’s brother opened the door, Shavuo allegedly tried forcing his way in, prompting a scuffle between Shavuo and the 16-year-old that spilled out onto the street.

Armed with a baseball bat, Paul then came to his brother’s aid, according to sources and witnesses.

“I just saw the [older] brother beating him … He just kept hitting him,” next-door neighbor Wayne Barrett said at the time. “He was still standing over the guy when the police rolled up.”

Shavuo, who had a Maryland address, suffered head trauma, and was also stabbed in the torso during the melee, police said. He was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His death was deemed a homicide on Dec. 5, police said.
