A Connecticut man who police allege brutally stabbed his girlfriend dozens of times and then kidnapped her 6-year-old son and dumped him in Massachusetts on New Year’s Day was arrested in a Midtown McDonald’s on Wednesday morning.
Edgardo Manuel Maldonado was awaiting extradition to Connecticut to face the music.
Maldonado got into a beef with his girlfriend around 2 a.m. Tuesday in Hartford and knifed her 30 times inside a car, Hartford Police Lt. Paul Cicero said. She fled and Maldonado sped off with the woman’s 6-year-old son still inside.
She was later found covered in blood screaming and pounding on doors asking for help — while the child was found wandering the streets alone 60 miles away in Worcester, Mass., at 5:30 a.m., according to Cicero. The car was found nearby with a “bladed weapon” in plain view, he noted.
“Hopefully the child was sleeping when this assault occurred,” Cicero said.
Many of the woman’s injuries were to her hands or arms as she swatted away her attacker, according to authorities, who said she in stable condition at Hartford Hospital Wednesday morning.
The child is being held by the Massachusetts Department of Children & Families, Cicero said.
A cooperating witness figured out Maldonado was in Midtown on Wednesday and dropped a dime on him, officials said.
Maldonado has been arrested for domestic violence “several” times, but his relationship with his victim Tuesday began recently, Cicero said.
